19-year old from Salem ends life hours before appearing for NEET exam

Fear of failure in the medical entrance exam pushed a 19-year old teen from Salem to take his life hours before his third attempt at the NEET exam that was scheduled for Sunday.


As per the official police statement, the 19-year old has been identified as S Dhanush from Koozhaiyur, near Mettur in Salem. He was a medical aspirant who appeared for the NEET exam twice before and was due to appear for a third time this Sunday but his anxiousness and fear of failure led him to end his life.

His brother Nishant, an engineering graduate, said that Dhanush has been meticulously preparing for the exam over the last couple of months.  “But, in the recent days, he was having fear about the exam and succeeding in it and started lamenting himself. Even last night, we encouraged him to write well,” he added.


Dhanush’s family found him dead in his room in the early hours of Sunday.


When the word of his death got out, relatives and village locals gathered in the locality which created a commotion. Local police rescued his body and sent it for an autopsy.

A case in the matter has been registered and the preliminary enquiry revealed that the deceased was suffering from anxiety for some time over his performance in the NEET exam. Further investigation is in process.
