Aam Aadmi Party emerges as the single largest party in Punjab by winning 92seats out of 117 seats. This is the first time in Punjab’s history that a party won single-handedly after 25 years. Earlier, in 1997, BJP-Akali alliance won 93 seats out of 117 seats. On the other hand, in the 2017 elections, Congress won 77 seats.
AAP's victory in the border state against all odds and then coming together of all other parties against it in the last few days before polling proves that Arvind Kejriwal has been able to win the confidence of voters. The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) chief ministerial candidate has created a buzz in the state with the slogan ‘Ik mauka Bhagwant Mann te Kejriwal nu’.
AAP’s slogan to bring a change raised hope for the people of Punjab. Earlier it was a direct contest between the SAD-BJP alliance and the Congress. Both parties have taken turns to rule the state, but patience has been wearing thin with them over unfulfilled promises and corruption allegations.
With a landslide victory in Punjab, AAP may look forward to other states in coming years.
