Khadoor Sahib MP & Waris Punjab De Chief, Amritpal Singh, is likely to spend another year in jail under the stringent NSA Act. MP Amritpal Singh has been lodged in Dibrugarh Jail under the NSA Act. It was expected that the Punjab Government would not extend the NSA on Amritpal Singh. The reason is that the Punjab Police has brought 9 other aides of Amritpal Singh back to Punjab to question them and carry forward the case. To do this, the Punjab Government did not extend NSA to them. Hence, it was expected that Amritpal Singh would be brought back to Punjab if the government decides not to extend the National Security Act.

However, the Waris Punjab De Chief is expected to remain in Dibrugarh Jail for another year. HT quoted an unnamed senior Punjab Police official who informed that a notice in this regard is being issued to the 32-year-old NSA detainee, who has been jailed in Dibrugarh in Assam since April 2023. The decision to extend Amritpal’s detention was taken after deliberations between the state and the central agencies, keeping in mind security concerns

For those who have forgotten, Amritpal Singh was arrested at Rode village in Moga district on April 23, 2023, following a month-long manhunt by Punjab Police as part of their crackdown that came three weeks after his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station in Amritsar district on February 23. Amritpal Singh's supporter stormed the Ajnala Police Station as they were demanding the release of one of his accomplices, Lovepreet Toofan.

It is pertinent to mention here that all 9 accomplices of Amritpal jailed at Dibrugarh in 2023 were brought back to Punjab recently to join the probe into the attack on the Ajnala police station. They are Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh Bajekhana, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Sarabjit Kalsi, Gurinder Pal Singh, Harjeet Singh, Kulwant Singh, Pappalpreet Singh and Varinderpal Johal.
