Bastar: The Naxal Story was released on Zee5 on May 17, 2024, and ever since then fans have been left disturbed over some hidden facts about the 2010 Dantewada incident in which 75 Indian Army Jawans and 1 Police personnel were martyred. Directed by Sudipto Sen, Bastar is a true story that highlights the 2010 Tadmetla incident in which 75 CRPF personnel and a state policeman were martyred by a battalion-strong contingent of PLGA, the 'military' wing of CPI(Maoist), in the dense forests between Chintalnar and Tadmetla, then in Dantewada district. While the makers have stated that they have used fictional names, Bastar movie showcases uncanny similarities with real-life incidents. Did JNU celebrate the 2010 Tadmetla incident?
The answer is yes. A newswire published a copy back in 2010 in which it confirmed that a section of JNU students celebrated the deaths of Indian Army Jawans. "I felt disappointed when I came to know that celebration was held at JNU (by some students) after the killing of 76 jawans in the forest of Tadmetla in 2010. I was then posted as DIG in the region," Inspector General of Police, Bastar range, SRP Kalluri was quoted saying .
His response came in the backdrop after (then) student leader Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested for allegedly raising anti-India slogans on the University Campus. Not only this, but a photo of Kanhaiya Kumar also went viral with the claims that he participated in the celebration of the Indian Army Jawans martyred in the Dantewada incident.
However, later the photo of Kanhiya Kumar celebrating in JNU turned out to be misleading. A controversial fact checker website reported that the viral photo of Kanhaiya Kumar was taken in 2016, where the alleged celebration took place in 2010.
Talking about JNU Dantewada Massacre celebrations, Special Director General of Police (anti-Naxaloperations) D M Awasthi was quoted saying that celebrations by Jawaharlal Nehru University students will not affect the Army's morale. "Morale of security forces is very high. They are battling the rebels in adverse conditions. We are all Indians and have faith in the law of the land and the constitution," he said.
