Punjab Municipal Election, Municipal Election Punjab 2024, Supreme Court Municipal Election Punjab: In a big relief for the Punjab Government, the Supreme Court of India on Monday allotted 8 weeks time to complete the municipal elections. An appeal was filed in the Supreme Court against the Punjab & Haryana High Court's orders that directed the Punjab Government and State Election Commission to conduct Municipal corporation and Municipality elections as soon as possible. In the Supreme Court, the order was passed by a bench of Judges, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan. The Supreme Court also directed the government to issue a notification for the elections within 2 weeks.
For the unversed, Punjab and Haryana High Court in its October 19 order, directed the Punjab Government to declare the poll schedule for five municipal corporations (MCs) and 42 municipal councils/nagar panchayats within 15 days. The elections for the municipal corporations of Amritsar, Patiala, Jalandhar, Phagwara and Ludhiana have been pending for the last two years.
Live Law had reported that the Punjab & Haryana High Court has issued a writ of mandamus to the Punjab's State Election Commission and Punjab Government to initiate the process of holding elections by notifying election programmes in all the Municipalities and Municipal Corporations within 15 days, without conducting the fresh exercise of delimitation.
