In a major operation, Canada’s Border Security Agency conducted raids at 187 locations in British Columbia (BC), arresting 950 students, primarily from Punjab, India. These students were found working illegal extended hours beyond the permitted limit on their student visas. As a result, their chances of obtaining Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada have been jeopardized, with negative remarks recorded on their profiles.
Institutions Fined for Employing Students Illegally
The students were employed by over 185 institutions, which have now been fined millions of dollars for violating Canadian labor laws. International students on a student visa are only allowed to work 20 hours per week. However, many were found working over 30 hours in an attempt to earn more money, which is a direct violation of Canadian law.
Underpaid and Overworked
These students were reportedly earning below the legal wage, which should be a minimum of $35 CAD per hour. Despite working over 40 hours a week, only 20 hours were legal, while the rest of the work was paid at a lower rate. This situation left many of the students in a vulnerable position.
Impact of Rising Unemployment
Canada’s economy saw an unexpected loss of 1,400 jobs in June 2023, pushing the unemployment rate to 6.4%, the highest in 29 months. This downturn in the labor market has led to stricter enforcement on international students and illegal work practices.
PR Applications in Jeopardy
Due to their involvement in illegal work, these students’ PR applications are now at risk. The Canadian government is taking serious actions, and this incident could have long-term consequences for their future in Canada.
This event has also raised alarm among other international students working illegally in Canada.
