‘India’s Got Latent’ controversy erupted when co-host Ranveer Allahabadia made an inappropriate remark to a contestant, sparking backlash. While Ranveer issued a public apology, Samay Raina has also released an apology.
In a recent development in the matter, Pandit Rao Dharennavar has written to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami, urging action against stand-up comedian Jaspreet Singh for using derogatory language on the show ‘India’s Got Latent’. Dharennavar contends that Singh’s remarks are damaging the image of Sikhs and are contrary to Sikh culture.
This appeal comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding ‘India Got Latent’, a show hosted by comedian Samay Raina. The program has faced significant backlash for content deemed offensive and inappropriate. Notably, YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, a guest panelist on the show, made a controversial remark involving a question about parents, which led to widespread criticism and multiple FIRs filed against him and another panelist, including Raina, Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, and Aproorva Makhija.
In response to the mounting criticism, Samay Raina has removed all episodes of ‘India’s Got Latent’ from his YouTube channel and issued a public apology, stating that the show’s only objective was to make people laugh.
The SGPC has yet to issue an official response to Dharennavar’s letter. The situation continues to evolve, with discussions about the boundaries of comedy and the importance of cultural sensitivity gaining prominence.
While there are two sections where one is outrageous criticizing and there is another side that has come in support of Samay Raina and his show. Dhruv Rathee claims that the issue is unnecessarily being cooked to divert attention from the other real issues. Manuwar Faruqui in his statement in support of Samay Raina, compared Samay with the sun, where he says that the sun at its rising and at its dawn is appealing to everyone but the sun at its peak does bother people.
Altogether it remains to be seen whether these comedians will continue to face backlash or be allowed to learn and grow from their controversy.
