He went on to say that the government should put an end to the people's suffering and pay compensation to them.

"There are lakhs of families in India where parents, brothers, and sisters have died. They won't come back. But keep in mind that Congress will go to great lengths to ensure that those families receive the Rs.4 lakh compensation they deserve. And we'll put a lot of pressure on the government to make sure it does," Rahul Gandhi said.

“Congress has two demands- 1) Reveal real Covid death figures and 2) Provide Rs4 Lakh compensation to the families of deceased,” the tweet by Rahul Gandhi read.

On Monday, the Supreme Court heard the case of compensation in Covid death cases and slammed the Gujarat government for deviating from its approved process and forming a scrutiny committee instead, to disburse ex-gratia compensation to families of those who died from Covid-19.

The Supreme Court also ordered the Centre to collect data from various state governments in connection to ex-gratia payments for Covid deaths, as well as information on the establishment of grievance redressal committees.

The Supreme Court approved Rs 50,000 ex-gratia for the kin of Covid victims in its October 4 judgement, as recommended by the National Disaster Management Authority.

"No state shall deny ex-gratia assistance of Rs 50,000 to the deceased's next of kin solely on the ground that the cause of death is not mentioned as died due to Covid-19 in the death certificate issued by the appropriate authority," the bench said.

The ex-gratia will be over and above the compensation/amount to be paid by the Centre/states/Union Territories under various benevolent schemes, according to the bench.
