Coronavirus Updates: With 67,708 new cases, India’s covid tally breaches 73-lakh mark

Today is the 206th day since India implemented a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of novel coronavirus. As the country reopens in a phased manner, the cases are still rising. According to data from the Union Health Ministry, 67,708 new COVID-19 cases and 680 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. There are 8,12,390 active covid-19 cases while 63,83,441 COVID-19 patients have been cured and discharged so far. The country’s COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 87.4 per cent. The total number of confirmed covid-19 cases have increased to 73,07,097. According to the health ministry, the total number of deaths in the country due to covid infection stands at 1,11,266. 

After remaining closed for seven months, the union government has allowed theatres, cinema halls and multiplexes to reopen from today in several parts of the country with 50 per cent capacity. The seats will be marked 'not to be occupied' for ensuring that people follow social distancing. The theatre authorities have to operate within the set of standard operating procedures (SOPs).   

Global coronavirus tally stands at 38,729,174 while as many as 29,113,040 patients have recovered from the infection and 1,096,320 covid-19 patients have lost their lives from the virus. The United States remains the worst-hit covid country with 8,148,928 cases. It is followed by India which has 7,307,097 cases, Brazil 5,141,498 and Russia with 1,340,409. France has declared a public health state of emergency over rising covid-19 cases. 

COVID-19 latest updates:

# According to The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 9,12,26,305 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the country till yesterday October 14. Of these, 11,36,183 were tested yesterday.

# Telangana state has recorded 1,432 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to 2,17,670. With eight more deaths, the total number of deaths in the state has reached 1,249.

# After testing positive for the covid-19 on Wednesday, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and his wife Sadhana are stable now.

# After 53 more people tested positive for covid-19, Nagaland’s covid tally went up to 7,416 on Wednesday. As many as 85 patients recovered from the infection taking the number of cured people to 5,855, Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom said. 

# Karnataka's Covid tally spikes to 7,35,371, with 9,265 new cases in the last 24 hours. Active cases have risen to 1,13,987 till Tuesday. 8,662 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, 6,11,167 people have recovered in the state while 75 succumbed to the infection, taking the death toll to 10,198 by far.
