Congress Working Committee is at odds on the election of new Congress chief. On Monday, CWC held a meeting to discuss the party's poor performance in the recently-held Assembly polls and election to the new party president.

In the meeting, Ashok Gehlot, Gulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma opposed the new President’s election saying there is no need for election during coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, it was said that CWC has decided to elect Congress President by June 23. However, Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi has not said anything regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, discussing the poor party performance in Assembly elections Sonia Gandhi said, “This CWC meeting has been convened to discuss the results of the recently-held Assembly polls. We have to take note of our serious setbacks. To say that we are deeply disappointed is to make an understatement."

In the meeting, Sonia Gandhi said that the coronavirus crisis is worsening and the center has failed in fighting the pandemic. "The situation has become even more catastrophic. Governance failures have become even more stark. Scientific advice has been willfully ignored and the country is paying a horrendous price for the Modi government's neglect of the pandemic, indeed its willful patronage of super-spreader events that were allowed for partisan gains," she said.

Earlier in 2019, Rahul Gandhi had resigned from the position of Congress chief after losing the Lok Sabha elections and Sonia Gandhi became the interim chief of the party.
