DC reviews Jal Jeevan Mission, directs officials to ensure tap water connections to 45274 rural households by June 2021

Jalandhar provides functional tap water connections to 1.82 lakh households

Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori on Wednesday directed the officials of water supply and sanitation to ensure tap water connections to 45274 households in Jalandhar by the end of June 2021 under Jal Jeevan Mission.

Presiding over a meeting held under Jal Jeevan Mission with the officials, Deputy Commissioner informed the district administration that it had a target of covering 2,32,122 households with functional tap water connections under Jal Jeevan Mission.

He said that 1, 31,802 households were given functional tap water connections in April 2020, and during the last eight months, it provided the functional tap water connections to 51160 households taking the coverage tally to 1, 82,962 households.

He further told out of the remaining 49160 households, some villages have now come under the city’s jurisdiction due to which the target has been reduced to 45274 households which would be water tap connections in the next five months.

Deputy Commissioner said that work is already on 16037 households and others are in the tendering stage.

He said that the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, is committed to achieving universal coverage of 100% rural households with Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) at an accelerated pace by March 2022 but district administration is aiming to cover the target by June 2021.

Ghanshyam Thori asked the executive engineers and Junior Engineers and others of the Water Supply and Sanitation Department to leave no stone unturned to cover all remaining rural households by June 2021 so that district administration can ensure the potable water service delivery in adequate quantity to all households.

He further told them to hold meetings with the remaining panchayats’ heads and expedite the ongoing works to benefit the rural population mostly from the poor section of the society.

He said that under Jal Jeevan Mission, the local panchayat is being involved in the planning, implementation, management, operation, and maintenance of water supply systems in villages for achieving drinking water to all households in the rural areas.

Deputy Commissioner further said the focus is also being laid on rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and management of household wastewater for reuse in agriculture.
