DDMA disallows Chhath celebrations in public places, bans fairs & melas

Fresh guidelines have been announced by the DDMA as the festival season is almost here, according to these guidelines, large gatherings are not permitted till November 15.

On Thursday, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has announced fresh Covid-related guidelines amid the festive season. As per the latest orders chat celebration would not take place at the public places and river banks and fairs and melas would not happen during the festival.

Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in the official notice informed, “Fairs, melas, food stalls, jhoolas, rallies and processions will not be permitted during festivals in Delhi. Chhath pooja celebration shall not be allowed in public places and people are advised to celebrate the same at their homes.”

It further informed that the restrictions on large gatherings and congregations imposed earlier are being relaxed till November 15, 2021. The notice read, “It may be noted that restrictions on gatherings and large congregations imposed earlier are being relaxed only to the extent of allowing celebrations of upcoming festivals till November 15.”

It read that to organise an event the organising committee has to inform the District Magistrate (DM), in advance. DDMA further clarified that no standing or squatting event would happen and only sitting on chairs with social distancing will be permitted.

It added, “All event organisers will have to obtain requisite permissions from the district magistrate (DM) concerned for organising festival events, well in advance. No permission shall be granted by DMs or authorities for conducting any event in containment zones.”

Chhath Puja, aka Surya Shashthi, is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Shashthi. This festival is celebrated after 6 days of Diwali and is mainly celebrated in the states of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. This year, the festival would be celebrated from November 8 to November 11. 

Environmentalists have claimed that the festival of Chhath is one of the most eco-friendly religious festivals that should be used to spread “the message of nature conservation.”
