The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has named Hargobind Singh Dhaliwal, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and former Special Commissioner of Police in New Delhi, as the Director General of Police (DGP) for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Dhaliwal, an IPS officer from the 1997 batch, played a significant role in the investigation of several high-profile cases, including the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, the Dhaula Kuan gang rape case, the murder of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan, and the Jigisha Ghosh murder case.
This is part of a larger reorganization of the police force. The current DGP of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Devesh Chandra Srivastava, has been reassigned to New Delhi. Shalini Singh, an IPS officer and the Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) in Delhi, will assume the position of DGP of Puducherry on August 1.
The Delhi Police underwent a major restructuring earlier this year that resulted in the departure of 27 senior officials, including Special Commissioners of Police and Deputy Commissioners of Police. This latest transfer round is in accordance with the directive issued by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dhaliwal has made substantial contributions to law enforcement, as evidenced by his selection as the DGP of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The local police force is expected to be revitalized by his leadership and experience. The purpose of the restructuring is to improve the efficacy and efficiency of policing in these crucial areas.
