Veteran filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani aka Raju Hirani has shared an untold story about his blockbuster movie 3 Idiots. 3 Idiots was released in theaters in 2009 and it became one of the biggest blockbuster movies of Aamir Khan and the starcast of the movie. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, 3 Idiots is a comedy-drama that revolves around three students studying in an Engineering college and each one of them has unique background stories.
Aamir Khan places the character of Rancho/Funsuk Wangdu in the movie. Recently, Rajkumar Hirani in a podcast with Komal Nahta revealed that Rancho's character in 3 Idiots is actually real. "I studied at a film institute. I lived the life of a hosteler. I found it very interesting. I felt that there are many stories in a hostel and I should show them in my movies in the future. I found a character in film-institute. It resembles Aamir Khan's character of Rancho in 3 Idiots. I cannot take his name. The story is of a character who wanted to be a filmmaker but he could not get admission to the film institute but his friend got admission. However, his father did not let him to the film institute as his father wanted him to become an engineer," said Raju Hirani
Hirani further said, "So, this person started attending classes on his friend's behalf. He even changed his name to his name. No one came to know about this. Once he passed out, after three years, we came to know that his name was something else. I told him you will not get the certificate. He said that he never attended the classes for the certificate. I just wanted to learn about cinemas. So, that character is a true story. Education is not a certificate. This is how the story evolved."
3 Idiots Rancho
For those who have forgotten, Aamir Khan played the character of Rancho i.e. Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad. However, later it was released that Aamir was Rancho. His pet name was Chotey. He accepted Rancho's name because he wanted to be an Engineer, on the other hand, real-life Rancho played by Javed Jafferi was not good in studies at all. In the end, it was found that Aamir's character name was Funsuk Wangdu. Due to his presence in Ladakh, many fans wondered that Funsuk Wangdu's character is inspired by activist Sonam Wangchuk.
