Explained: Zydus Cadila vaccine to be available for 12-18 age group soon, here’s what to know

Centre informs Supreme Court that Zydus Cadila’s Covid-19 vaccine ‘ZyCoV-D’ would be soon available for children aged 12-18 years.

Amid the second wave of the Covid-19, the fear of the third wave has already started gripping the country. The Centre government and high authorities of the country have started a debate on the kid’s vaccination as it is expected that the third wave of Covid-19 would majorly affect children below 18 years. 

Parents are also concerned about their children’s health. However, there is good news as after AIIMS Patna, now AIIMS Delhi has also started screening children for the Covid-19 vaccine.

As per the government source, AIIMS Delhi has started the screening with the Covid-19 vaccine of Zydus Cadila. Zydus Cadila has already started the screening of its Covdid-19 vaccine on children aged between 12 to 18 years. 

Along with it, another indigenous vaccine Covaxin has also started the clinical trial on children. This trial process is divided into three categories. The first category would include kids aged between two years to five years, the second category would have children aged between six years to 12 years and the third category would have children aged between 12 years to 18 years. 

On Saturday, the central government has submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court, the affidavit read about the development of a new coronavirus vaccine by Indian pharmaceutical company Zydus Cadila, which would be available soon for children aged between 12 to 18 years. 

In this affidavit, the centre also informed the apex body that it has planned to vaccinate all adults (18+ citizens) by the end of this year. It added that country would require about 186.6 crore doses to vaccinate people above 18 years as the number of the same is 93-94 crore.

How many doses would be administrated by India, for children aged 12-18 years?

There are more than 14 crore children in India between the age of 12-18 years. So, approximately 25 crore vaccine doses would be needed for the administration.

What is Zydus Cadila?

Zydus Cadila (also popular as Cadila Healthcare Limited) is an Ahmedabad-based Indian multinational pharmaceutical company, which is primarily engaged in the manufacturing of generic drugs. Recently it has developed the Covid-19 vaccine ZyCoV-D for children between the age of 12 to 18 years.

After Covishield and Covaxin, ZyCoV-D would be India’s third vaccine against the novel coronavirus. Where Covishield and Covaxin are two-dose vaccines, ZyCoV-D would be a three-dose vaccine. 

The company has aimed to deliver 24 crore doses per year, the company would start the manufacturing with one crore doses a month and would eventually increase the production. 

How does the ZyCoV-D vaccine work?

This vaccine is a ‘DNA vaccine’ that works against the major viral membrane protein which is responsible for the novel coronavirus’s entry into the human body and human cells. 

The manufacturing company has recruited more than 28,000 volunteers for the trial of ZyCoV-D, and claims that it is “the largest trail for Covid vaccine in the country.”
