Farmers’ across Punjab have been protesting against the BJP-led protest central government since February 2024. The farmer unions have been vehemently protesting against the saffron party in Punjab. BJP faced so much opposition in Punjab that they failed to secure victory in a single parliamentary constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The farmers' protests however seem to picking up the pace once again as in a meeting held by farmers in Shahkot town of Jalandhar, Punjab, it has been decided that they will leave for Shambhu border on June 20. Farmer leader Jasbir Singh Piddi informed that the meeting was held in a Gurdwara Sahib in Shahkot. The meeting mainly discussed the use of funds given by the people and the future strategy.
Piddi said that there has also been a discussion regarding preparations to strengthen the ongoing farmers' protest at the Shambhu border. He said that on June 20, various groups from Jalandhar and surrounding districts will leave for Shambhu border once again. This protest will continue until the central government decides to address their issues.
Farmer leader Salwinder Singh said that almost four months have passed since the joint protest at Shambhu border. The farmers are facing difficulties carrying out the protest as efficiently as possible. They say that schedules and schemes are being prepared in all the districts mainly keeping in mind the harvesting of crops and paddy so that the protests can be carried out smoothly.
Kangana Ranaut CISF slap case
Farmer leaders said action taken against the CISF police who slapped Kangana Ranaut, elected MP from Mandi seat of Himachal Pradesh, was wrong. Kangana first said objectionable things to Kulwinder Kaur, a resident of Kapurthala, Punjab, prompting the action from her. The farmers have demanded that Kulwinder Kaur be reinstated in her job with immediate effect and the FIR lodged should be cancelled.
