The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) announced its decision to resume the agitation to push the Central Government to fulfil their pending demands for MSP, loan waiver and pension for the farmers. The farmers union said that it will push for meetings with the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and the leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi, to put the farmers’ demands in front of them. The SKM however has not announce the specific date for the continuation of the movement.
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), which led the 2020-21 farmers' protest, made the announcement a day after its general body met. "The general body has decided to resume the agitation demanding implementation of the agreement, dated December 9, 2021, that the Union government has with the SKM, signed by the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Government of India, and other key demands affecting the livelihood of farmers," the SKM said.
The SKM intends to redouble its efforts by presenting an updated demand charter to every member of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. Delegations from the relevant SKM state leadership will personally meet with the MPs from July 16–18. These meetings are intended to coerce the MPs to apply pressure on the NDA government and demand that the farmers' demands be met immediately.
The organisation also said that on August 9, the SKM will observe "Quit India Day" as "Corporates Quit India Day" by holding demonstrations across the country in support of its charter of demands.
Farmers movement so far:
The farmers had started the ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement in February this year to protest against the Central government regarding Minimum Support Price as per the Swaminanthan Report, Loan waiver and pension for the farmers. However, their advance was stopped by the Haryana Government at the Shambhu border, who put up layers of barricading to stop the movement in its tracks. Yesterday, the High court had ordered the Haryana administration to clear the barricading within a week, due to which the NH-44 connection New Delhi to Punjab will once again be open for transport.
