In a major development, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) on Tuesday approved Chandigarh Pet Dogs and Community Dogs Bylaw 2023 under which it banned six ferocious dog breeds. The Chandigarh MC decided to crack down on dog menace in the Union Territory (UT). Chandigarh Dog Ban reports first came to the fore in 2023, however, only a proposal was given. Finally, in 2024, the Chandigarh Dog Ban has been enforced. Apart from the ban on 6 dog breeds, pet dogs will have to be registered in the city and people will not be able to feed any dog anywhere. The list of dogs banned in Chandigarh is- American Bull Dog, American Pitbull, Bull Terrier, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, and Rottweiler.
As per reports, Mayor Kuldeep Kumar placed this table agenda in the House meeting, on which BJP expressed protest. He said that time should be given to read it, but despite that, the agenda was passed unanimously. To save Chandigarh from dog terror, the Municipal Corporation has prepared Bylaw 2023.
Houses having an area of five marlas or less will be able to keep one dog. If more than one family is living on different floors, a maximum of three dogs will be allowed. Houses larger than five marlas and less than 12 marlas will be able to keep two dogs. In this also three dogs will be allowed on different floors.
Three dogs will be allowed in houses larger than 12 marlas. It will be mandatory to adopt one of these Mongrel/Indi dogs and households with more than one kanal can have four dogs. It will be mandatory to adopt two of these Mongrel/Indi dogs.
If you want to keep a dog then you will have to pay Rs 500 and get it registered. Two latest photographs and a vaccination certificate of the dog will be required along with the application. The dog will be given a metal token. The dog will have to be tied around the neck. This registration will be for a lifetime but it will have to be renewed every 5 years.
There will be a ban on taking dogs to Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden, Shantikunj, Leisure Valley, Mini Rose Garden, Fragrance Garden, Terrence Garden, Shivalik Garden, and many other places. People going out for a walk in the parks will have to carry a poop bag with them.
Now no one will be able to feed a straight dog anywhere. With the consent of RWA and the councilor, places will be selected in each area, where dogs can be fed.
It is pertinent to mention here that if someone is found keeping these dogs, then a fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed against him for violating the rules. Apart from this, it is mandatory to register the pet dog. It will be the responsibility of the owner. There will also be a provision for action if this is not done.
