A police complaint was registered against Leena Manimekalai, director of the documentary film ‘Kaali’ for hurting religious sentiments with a controversial poster.

Director Leena Manimekalai recently tweeted a poster of the new documentary film Kaali which created huge unrest among the people of India. The poster shows a picture of a woman dressed as the Hindu- goddess smoking a cigarette.

The poster faced outrage from netizens as they felt that it has hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community due to its depiction of the goddess Kali.

The director shared a tweet on 2nd July saying, “Super thrilled to share the launch of my recent film – today at @AgaKhanMuseum… as a part of its “Rhythms of Canada”. Feeling pumped with my crew.”

Sometime after her tweet, the hashtag ‘ArrestLeenaManimekalai’ also started trending on Twitter and many people also demanded that the Home Minister should also intervene in this matter.

Today, a Delhi-based lawyer has filed a complaint against the director by calling the poster of the film “highly objectionable.”

A report published in news agency IANS quoted the lawyer as saying, “The Director has hurt my religious sentiments by showing Goddess Kali smoking which is highly objectionable and not acceptable in any manner.” The complainant called the poster ‘deplorable’ and added that using it to promote a film is highly ‘outrageous, atrocious and hurting the sentiments and beliefs of the Hindu community.’

A complaint registered with the cyber cell of Delhi also read that circulation of this photo on different social media platforms has hurt the feeling of the Hindu community and is offensive under the sections 298,295A, 505, 67 I.T Act, and 34 IPC and she should be pushed for the same.
