As the coronavirus rips through the health system of India, innumerable people are losing their lives. India is facing a more dangerous and deadly second wave of coronavirus. The health system has collapsed due to a lack of beds, oxygen and other medical facilities.

Crematories and burial halls are full. With thousands of fatalities daily, people are even struggling to find a place to respectfully cremate their lost loved ones. However, several cases are reported from different parts of India in which people are abandoning the bodies of patients deceased due to Covid.

Following these heart-wrenching incidents, KK Gupta, a Health Department Inspector in Uttar Pradesh decided to step up and cremate these abandoned Covid positive bodies.

KK Gupta, 45, is a resident of Jaunpur. He is deployed on the post of Inspector in the Filaria Branch of the Health Department in the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh for the last two decades.

Amid the Covid19 pandemic, Mr. Gupta along with his wife and children too had contracted the virus. His wife’s condition was critical. But with the blessing he earned by ritually cremating abandoned bodies, KK Gupta along with his family managed to defeat Covid 19 and finally tested negative.

Despite, he and his family still recovering from covid, KK Gupta is providing funeral services that too at his own expense.

He says, “Many such incidents have come up during the pandemic in which some people left their mother, brother, father, uncle in an abandoned condition and ran away.” He tells, “Just a few days ago, a 72-year-old man from Sudhuyamu area died of Covid19. The family members left the corpse at the gate of medical college and ran away.”

Later, unable to find the kins KK Gupta cremated the body of the elderly with Hindu rituals.

So far, KK Gupta has performed the last rites of the 6 Muslims and 23 Hindus who were abandoned by their families.
