In the latest development, it has been found that Jalandhar health authorities typo has again alarmed the spread of the virus in the city. On April 28, health officials of Civil Hospital declared a patient named Vishav Sharma (25)--Corona negative and discharged him from Isolation ward, directed him to go under home quarantine for 14 days.

Sharma, before going home thanked corona-warriors for curing him and motivated others who are battling against the contagious disease to stay strong and positive. When Sharma reached his place of residence--Lava Bazaar, his friends gave him a grand welcome, showered flowers on him and celebrated his triumph over coronavirus. Later, Sharma celebrated his victory with family members and few close relatives despite the directions of practicing home quarantine for 14 days and maintaining social distance.

But, late night at 11:30 officials call Sharma to inform that his reports are COVID-19 positive and he has to come to the hospital for the treatment.

While talking to the media, the patient said: “Doctors told me that your report had come negative and you can go home. I was discharged at 2:00 pm. I returned home and met all my family members and a few relatives. Then at 11:30 pm Dr Kashmiri Lal, Senior Medical Officer (SMO),  of Civil hospital called me and told to return to the hospital. They told me that my report was positive.”

It is to be noted here that in the course of celebrating his win over disease, Sharma met nearly 50 people whose lives are now at risk of getting infected with the COVID-19. The question here arises that were his (Sharma) friends and family not aware of maintaining distance from a person who was suspected to be positive for a deadly disease? How significant was it for them to celebrate his win instantly?

Even a press release issued by the district public relation department on Tuesday mentioned that three patients were tested negative including the youth. The other two were a Tablighi member from Kartarpur and a 40-year-old man from Raja Garden Colony. Fortunately, they did not leave for home and later in the evening was declared corona positive again. This has prevented the transmission of the disease largely.

Sharma has now accused the hospital staff of putting the lives of his family members at risk.

“Coronavirus is such a big disease and they are playing a game of negative-positive with me. They have put the life of my family in danger too,” he said.

Civil surgeon Dr Gurvinder Kaur Chawla said that an inquiry has been ordered to fix responsibility for the lapse, strict action will be taken against such careless typo which has now put the lives of others at risk.

Till date, the hospital could not locate the source of infection of at least six Covid-19 patients in the district. In the initial stages of the virus outbreak, the hospital’s paramedical staff was not provided gloves and PPE kits, with some even being forced to wear plastic bags on their hands while attending COVID-19 patients.

But, will they take any action against Sharma who did not follow the protocol of staying under quarantine for 14 days and transmitting disease onto others?
