Heavy rain warning in Kerala, IMD raises red alert in 5 districts

The weather forecasting agency has issued a red alert in five districts – Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur. Kerala CM has shared words of caution.

On Saturday, the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in five districts – Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur, and an orange alert in seven districts. 


According to the latest update by IMD, the districts have been put on red alert because it is expected that the districts would receive heavy rainfall (more than 20 cm). 


The seven districts of the state, which are put on ‘orange alert’ are – Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad, which may receive “heavy to very heavy rainfall”. Two districts – Kannur and Kasaragod, have been put on yellow alert.

The Chief Minister’s office has also shared words of caution to safeguard the citizens and has urged people to be extremely careful and avoid venturing out for travels into the mountains or near rivers.


“Under the influence of the low-pressure area over Southeast Arabian Sea off Kerala coast, the state is expected to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls till the morning of October 17 (Sunday). Isolated heavy rainfall is expected on 18th (Monday) and a further reduction in rainfall from 19th morning (Tuesday),” the CMO statement read. 


It has further warned fishermen and said, “Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 Kmph gusting 60 Kmph is likely to prevail over Kerala coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these sea areas" today and tomorrow.”


Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has conducted a review meeting with the collectors of all districts.
