India records biggest-ever single day spike with over 2lakh cases, 1037 deaths

India recorded 200,739 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, setting another grim one-day record, taking the overall tally to 14,074,564 on Thursday, according to the data issued by the Union Health Ministry.

India has been the world's worst-hit country since April 2, forcing various states to impose strict curbs to control the virus.

The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra with 3,578,160 cases, Kerala with1, 172,882 cases, Karnataka with 1,094,912 cases, Tamil Nadu with 940,145 cases, and Andhra Pradesh with 928,664 cases.

India's daily deaths due to Covid are also rising with 1,038 new deaths reported in last 24 hours, the second consecutive day with over thousand deaths. This took the overall death toll in the country to 1,73,123.

A total of 93,528 patients recovered in the same time span, taking the number of recoveries to 1,24,29,564 with a recovery rate of 88.31 per cent.

The Health Ministry said that a total of 13,84,549 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. So far, 26,20,03,415 samples have been tested in the country.

As many as 1,037 people succumbed to the disease, which increased the death toll to 173,152. A total of 83,339 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries to 1,23,36,036 with a recovery rate of 88.92 per cent.
