India on Thursday reported 2,76,110 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total infection tally to 25,772,440. The death toll mounted to 2,87,122 with 3,874 more succumbing to the disease. On Wednesday, India had recorded its highest single-day death toll with 4,529 fatalities.
Several states are recording increasing black fungus cases in those recovered from Covid.
A total of 3,69,077 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours, with 2,23,55,440 being cured of Covid to date, said the Health Ministry.
The Health Ministry data on Thursday morning showed that the country continues to maintain a descending trend in daily cases of coronavirus after reporting over 3,00,000 cases in the deadly second wave of COVID-19.
Over 20.55 lakh samples were tested for the infection in the last 24 hours, accounting for the highest single-day tests so far.
Maharashtra has the highest number of infections, followed by Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
On Wednesday, Maharashtra recorded 34,031 fresh cases of Covid and 594 deaths in a day. About 90 people died of mucormycosis.

Delhi recorded 3,846 new Covid cases on Wednesday, the lowest since April 5 and 235 patients died of the infection in the last 24 hours.
In Kerala, 32,762 cases of covid positive were reported on Wednesday and 112 patients died.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has approved a home-based rapid antigen testing (RAT) kit for COVID-19, which it advised should be used only on symptomatic individuals and on immediate contacts of laboratory-confirmed positive cases.
Rajasthan and Telangana have declared mucormycosis under the Epidemic Act.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in an official statement on Wednesday that India will be able to procure 267 crore coronavirus vaccine doses by the end of this year and will be in a position to inoculate at least all of its adult population.
