Buta Singh Gill, a well-known builder and the president of Gurudwara Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Edmonton, Canada was shot dead in broad daylight. Buta Singh, originally from Village Landhra, Phillaur, had an associated construction site near the Millwood Rec Center where the incident occured.
According to reports, the attacker Nick Dhaliwal was also associated with the construction profession as a 'roofer'. The third victim of this incident has been described as Sarabjit Singh, who is a civil engineer who is admitted to the hospital in a critically injured condition.
According to sources, the three men were present at the construction site when an argument broke out between Gill and Dhaliwal over an issue, after which Dhaliwal took out his pistol and opened fire, killing Dhaliwal and the engineer on the spot. Sarabjit Singh was injured. According to sources, Nick Dhaliwal also shot himself after the incident and was killed on the spot.
According to reports, the builder had received extortion calls before he was shot dead. Before Gill, many others living in Canada were a target of similar calls. Commenting on the issue, the government expressed concern over reports that some members of the Indian community in Canada had received "extortion calls".
