It is evident that the shift took place due to increased restrictions imposed by the United States government on immigration, said the National Foundation for American Policy.
80,685 Indians had opted for permanent residency in Canada by the November 2019, showing rise 105 per cent from 3,705 people in 2016, according to NFAP's analysis of data from Immigration, Refugess and Citizenship, Canada.
Stuart Anderson, executive director, NFAP said, "It is not a coincidence that the number of Indians choosing to study in and immigrate to Canada has increased at the same time (as) it has become more and more difficult for Indians to work in and immigrate to the United States."
Since Donald Trump assumed the presidentship of the United States, the Indian professionals had hard time to emigrate to US as he made the rules stricter. Trump's policies meant that more H-1B visas, the short-term work permit for hi-tech talent soared from 6 per cent in 2015 to 24 per cent in the first three quarter of 2019.
However, the report, finds it difficult to state the exact number of Indians, shifted to Canada and those who have gone to Canada directly from India.
