India’s daily infections fall below 2 lakh, lowest since mid-April

India on Tuesday reported below 2 lakh for the first time since April 14 as it recorded 1,96,427 new cases, pushing the total caseload to 2,69,48,874. With 3,511 deaths, the total death toll reached 3,07,231. According to the data by the Union Health Ministry, the country saw a total of 3,26,850 discharges in the last 24 hours, pushing the total recovery to 2,40,54,861. 

There are 25,86,782 active cases in the country.

India’s Covid-19 daily recoveries exceeded new cases for the 11th consecutive day on Monday, while the weekly positivity rate has also decreased to 12.66 per cent. 

Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Odisha cumulatively account for 71.62 per cent of India's total active cases. 

Meanwhile, in a joint statement domestic pharma major Panacea Biotec and Russian sovereign wealth fund RDIF announced that they are producing the 'Sputnik V' COVID-19 vaccine in India in collaboration. As announced in April, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) - which markets the vaccine internationally, and Panacea Biotec agreed to produce 100 million doses per year of Sputnik V in India.

COVID-19 vaccine’s first batch produced at Panacea Biotec's facilities will reach Baddi in Himachal Pradesh and will be shipped to Russia's Gamaleya Center for "quality control", the joint statement said.

Several states are facing a severe shortage of vaccine and have slowed down in the vaccination drive, US vaccine makers Pfizer and Moderna have refused the requests to supply Delhi and Punjab with their vaccines, citing official policy and said they would only deal with the centre.
