Friendship is something that can’t be explained, it is a special bond of love that brings people together and friends are some people who never leave you alone even if everyone has left. They are the people who will be ready to walk by your side and they are ought to handle your midnight, senseless talks.

The best time to reward your lovely friends is today, on International Friendship Day. This day is celebrated on 30th July, but some countries like in India, United Arab Emirates, the USA, and Bangladesh celebrate this day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August every year.

History: This day was first organized by the founder of Hallmark Cards, Joyce Hall.  He wanted to celebrate the closeness of the people on August 2 but people came to know about the true intention behind celebrating this day. He wanted people to spend money on purchasing cards and the holiday which was given by the United States died as it made no relevance.

The Asian countries used to celebrate this day on August 2nd. They on July 30, 1958, World Friendship Crusade proposed to celebrate the peaceful culture of friendship by naming that day as International friendship day. This idea came to Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho on July 1958. The basic idea to celebrate this day was to promote friendship and partnership among humans, irrespective of race, caste, creed, religion, gender, and ethnicity.

In 1998, Nane Annan, the wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan represented Winnie the Pooh as the Ambassador of friendship at the United Nations. The co-host of the event was Kathy Lee and the co-sponsor was by the Disney Enterprises as well as by the UN Department of Public Information. And on April 27, 2011, it was officially declared that 30th July will be marked to celebrate International friendship day.

Significance: The main cause of celebrating this day is that people should come close, build strong bonds and relations, by not considering or discriminating on the basis of caste, religion, language, etc. People usually mark this day by describing their journey from being strangers and not calling each other to share everything!

Celebration: This day calls for spending quality time with friends, exchanging gifts, greeting cards, and friendship bands. They tie these friendship bands on each other’s wrists and make an effort to make their friends feel special. Don’t forget to build new bonds and strengthen the old ones.
