International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated on December 3 to raise awareness about the rights and well-being of the person with a disability.

The world celebrates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, every year. The day is also known as IDPD. IDPD mobilizes support for critical issues relating to the inclusion of persons with disabilities, promotes awareness-raising about disability issues and draws attention to the benefits of an inclusive and accessible society for all. 


According to the figures shared by the UN, today, the world population is over 7 billion people and more than one billion people, or approximately 15 percent of the world’s population, live with some form of disability; 80 per cent live in developing countries.

The day is celebrated with aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.


International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021: Theme


Every year, the world celebrates the day of person with disabilities under a specific theme. The theme for 2021 is – “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world”.

International Day of Person with Disabilities 2021: History


For the first time, the day is celebrated in the year 1992. The day is proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.


International Day of Person with Disabilities 2021: Director-General’s message


Ahead of the international day of person with disabilities, Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has shared a message, “On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I call on the entire international community to mobilize so that persons with disabilities may actively contribute to the response to the crisis and to the generation of new possibilities.”
