In a major development, the Jalandhar Cantonment Board Administration has announced a
complete ban on the sale of water balls (golgappas), sugarcane juice, and ice. Notably, this decision has been taken for the betterment of public health.

On May 26, 2025, the Sanitation Branch and the Tax Department warned street vendors and shopkeepers to remove their carts as soon as possible. The authorities have mentioned that this matter should be taken seriously, or else strict action will be taken against the individual who will not comply with the regulations.

What experts have to comment?

The CEO of the Cantonment Board of Jalandhar, Om Pal Singh, has outlined that the buying and purchase of fruit juices, lassi, and other edible items on streets can pose serious health risks to the lives of the public.

According to the reports, the ban has been imposed following the instruction of the Health Department of the Army due to the increasing cases of diseases like typhoid and jaundice in the area.

However, in reaction to the ban, some 60-70 street vendors approached CEO Om Pal Singh, led by civil member Puneet Bharti Shukla and presented a demand letter asking for the lifting of the ban.

At the meeting, CEO Singh instructed all vendors to adhere strictly to health and hygiene measures. Puneet Bharti Shukla said that the action was taken entirely in consideration of the health factor, but efforts are being made to provide relief to the hit vendors.

He also added that the demand has been put forward to Board President Brigadier Sunil Kumar Sol, and relief is awaited. Shukla also urged suppliers and vendors of ice to provide proper quality and hygiene so that no disease is spread due to contaminated ice.
