A counter-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri sector in the Pir Panjal ranges area claimed the lives of five Indian Army personnel- a junior commissioned officer (JCO) and four soldiers.


During an anti-insurgency operation in Poonch district, security personnel and terrorists engaged in combat. According to reports, intelligence inputs claimed the presence of militants in a village near DKG in Surankote after which the operation was conducted in the early hours.


According to a Defence Ministry spokesperson, the hiding ultras opened heavy fire on the search forces, critically injuring a JCO and four other ranks. They were rushed to the hospital for treatment but succumbed to injuries.

A terrorist was slain by security forces in the Hajin region of Bandipora district early today. He was a member of the prohibited terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and was recently involved in the killing of a civilian in Bandipora.


"Imtiyaz Ahmad Dar, a terrorist killed in the attack, was linked to the banned terrorist group LeT (TRF). He was recently involved in the killing of a civilian in Shahgund Bandipora," IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar was cited in a tweet by J&K Police.

The other encounter erupted after security forces started a cordon and search operation at Khagund in the Verinag region of Anantnag district after receiving information about the presence of terrorists there. After militants opened fire on security officers, who retaliated, the search operation escalated into an encounter. A pistol and a grenade were also discovered by security forces. A police officer was injured and rushed to the hospital.


Terrorists killed five civilians in Jammu and Kashmir last week in separate incidents on Tuesday and Thursday.
