Jalandhar Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma’s image was misused by cyber criminals who created a fake ID under his name to scam unsuspecting Ludhiana citizens. The thugs sent messages to several people in Ludhiana pretending to be the Police Commissioner. The Commissioner said that the matter was brought to his attention and he confirmed that the ID was fake. He also said that appropriate action is being taken.
Giving information, Sonu, a resident of Ludhiana Chandigarh Road, said that he lives near Sacred Heart School. He received a friend request from a Facebook ID created in the name of Swapan Sharma. He accepted the request following which a message came from the “commissioner” asking him for his well-being. He tried to coerce him into giving his number and started talking to him on chat.
According to Sonu, the “commissioner” told him that he has a friend Santosh Kumar who will call you. He is an officer in CRPF and his duty has been transferred. He said that the friend wants to sell his furniture items in new and good condition. Police request the people to stay vigilant and alert if someone tries to cheat someone by sending a message using an ID made in their name.
