Over 200 hospitalised as mysterious disease sweeps in Andhra's Eluru town

Officials suspect this to be a case of consumption of contaminated water.

Health officials in Andhra Pradesh's Eluru town sounded an alert on Sunday as over 200 people were hospitalised since Saturday night with symptoms resembling epilepsy. Around 140 patients admitted to various hospitals on Saturday were discharged, but about 90 more people were reported sick on Sunday.

Government Hospital Eluru was received with 50 people with complaints of nausea, fainting and headache. Another 60 people were admitted to private hospitals. People complained of symptoms like suddenly collapsing, frothing at the mouth and shivering. 

Patients hospitalised on Saturday night were discharged on Sunday morning after they recovered.

Doctors said the condition of all was stable and two people were shifted to Vijayawada due to their worsening condition.

Most affected with this mysterious sickness were elderly and children, while the Medical and health experts have been trying to determine the cause of sickness.

Authorities were confused with this kind of sudden outbreak as the affected people were neither related nor they had attended a common event.

According to officials, the cases were reported from different areas in Eluru town of West Godavari district. While experts were analysing the cases, blood samples of people who were sick were tested but were found normal. 

Health Minister Alla Nani had visited the Government Hospital to check on the people undergoing treatment, said their Covid-19 samples were also tested and no one was found Corona positive.

He added 150 beds in Eluru and 50 beds in Vijayawada had been kept handy for any emergency. "The government is taking all necessary steps. There is no need for any panic," he said, adding that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was personally monitoring the situation.

Alla Nani has directed medical and health officials to visit each house in the town and conduct a survey to find out if the people were affected by using contaminated food or water. The health authorities have also been ordered to ensure the availability of emergency medicines to deal with any situation.
