Pandora Papers Leak: ‘Financial Status’ of prominent celebs revealed

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) claims it obtained the trove of more than 11.9 million confidential files to find secret financial dealings of many super-rich.

Recently, an unprecedented leak of financial records known as the “Pandora Papers” has revealed the offshore financial assets of dozens of current and former world leaders. The 'Pandora Papers' leak which claims to have exposed the offshore dealings of world leaders, politicians, celebrities, and billionaires.

Sachin Tendulkar, Nirav Modi, Anil Ambani, King of Jordan, former British President Tony Blair, Russian President Vladimir Pudin and Pakistan’s political elites are some of the names mentioned in the Pandora Papers. According to the reports, the financial status of around 380 Indians has been revealed and sixty of these prominent individuals and companies have been verified and have had their documents corroborated. 


Here are the details of the dealing exposed: 


Sachin Tendulkar: The Indian Express, in its report, claimed that Sachin, with his wife Anjali Tendulkar and father-in-law Anand Mehta, were named as Beneficial Owners (BOs) and Directors of a British Virgin Islands (BVI)-based company: Saas International Limited. The company was liquidated in July 2016. 

Tendulkar's attorney claimed the cricketer's investment is lawful and has been reported to tax authorities.

Former UK President: Tony Blair and his wife acquired a London office, they saved £312,000 in stamp duty by using an offshore company to purchase an almost $9 million office in London's Marylebone area that was partially owned by the family of a Bahraini minister, the Guardian reported. 


Nirav Modi: Nirav Modi, left India in January 2018, after Rs 13,500-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, had his sister Purvi set up a firm in the British Virgin Islands to act as a corporate protector of a trust formed through the Trident Trust Company, Singapore. 


King of Jordon: According to the ICIJ reports, Jordon’s King, King Abdullah II, has purchased around 14 luxury houses worth $106 million, including a $23 million property in California.

Russian President Vladimir Putin: Vladimir Putin is reportedly linked to undisclosed assets in Monaco, according to the leak.

While Putin is not mentioned directly in the documents, several of his close friends are, including a childhood buddy and a former sweetheart. 


Pakistan’s elite politicians: Several members of Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's inner circle, including current and former cabinet ministers, “secretly owned an array of companies and trusts holding millions of dollars of hidden wealth,” the investigative group reported.
