Panic ensued on Spicejet flight after a passenger tried to open emergency exit mid-air

After a safe landing in Varanasi, the custody of the passenger was given to police by the Central Industrial Security Force and SpiceJet's security.

Passengers onboard the Delhi-Varanasi SpiceJet flight on Saturday were panic-stricken after a man allegedly tried to open the emergency exit door mid-air, but was immediately restrained by the flight crew till the safe landing in Varanasi.

The man responsible for the incident was deemed mentally ill as per the Station House Officer in Phulpur.

As per the SHO, "A passenger attempted to open an emergency exit door mid-air on a Delhi to Varanasi flight. Crew members stopped and held him till the flight made a safe landing at the airport. The pilot of the flight informed ATC and requested priority landing."

After the incident, SpiceJet issued a statement saying, "On 27th March 2021, a passenger travelling on SpiceJet flight SG-2003 (Delhi-Varanasi) tried to open the emergency door of the aircraft in an abusive and aggressive state while the aircraft was airborne."

SpiceJet also mentioned that the co-passengers helped the flight crew in bringing the passenger under control.

"Captain requested for a priority landing as soon as he was informed by the crew," the SpiceJet spokesperson said.

Once the aircraft landed safely in Varanasi, CISFand SpiceJet's security staff handed over the passenger to the police.
