The United States has suddenly suspended the booking of new student visa interviews at embassies across the globe, on the orders of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This action comes as the Trump administration weighs expanding mandatory social media screening for foreign student applicants, a drastic increase from earlier efforts that primarily focused on back-to-study students who took part in pro-Palestine protests.

US embassies and consulates, effective immediately, have been directed not to make any new student (F, M) and exchange visitor (J) visa appointments until further notice. Previously scheduled interviews will go ahead as arranged.
The explanation declares that the administration is gearing up for tighter social media vetting, citing national security concerns and reports of some foreign students' alleged connection to campus protests, and more specifically, anti-Semitic or disruptive ones.
It is anticipated that whereas previous vetting was directed at students who had taken part in pro-Palestine demonstrations, the proposed policy, should it be adopted, would target all potential international students.

- Australia ranks third on the list with 122,202 Indian students traveling to the country to study. Australia is one of the top choices due to the relatively simple availability of post-study visas, secure cities, and top-level research.
- Germany: The fourth most favored country is Germany, with 42,997 Indian students going to the country to study. The reason Germany is so favored is due to the no/low tuition fees that the country provides. Due to the strong, accredited STEM programs and due to English-taught courses.
- Ireland: stands at number five in the ranking, with significant increases in Indian students coming into the country to study. Ireland is an English-speaking nation with an interesting tech center and hospitable visa arrangements.
Indian students have alternative study destinations, including France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
