PM Modi lauds 'Atmanirbhar farmers', says record yield during Covid-19

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the farmers of India who are self-reliant or Atmanirbhar for the record yield during Covid-19 pandemic on Thursday.

Adding that the crop growers are backbone of India, Modi said, "Farmers have been behind the progress of the country. They also played important role in the Chauri Chaura struggle. In the last six years, steps have been taken to make farmers self-reliant. As a result of this, agriculture sector has grown even during the pandemic."

"We have taken several steps in the interest of farmers. To make mandis profitable for farmers, 1,000 more mandis will be linked to e-NAM.," PM added while stressing on the measures taken by government to strengthen farmers.

The Prime Minister spoke about the Chauri-Chaura incident of 1922. Prime Minister Modi's statement has come at a time when the tensions between the farmers and government has reached at its peak and the impasse remains unresolved.

While the police has resorted to cementing metal spikes, barbed wires over walls and barricades to stop the entry of new farmers, the protest sites around Delhi have turned into a sort of fortresses.
