A new study has found the connection of poor sleep among the older adults with Alzheimer, suggesting that good sleeping habits may help preserve brain health.
Studying mice and people, researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have found that sleep deprivation increases levels of the key Alzheimer protein named tau.
Tau is normally found in the brain, even of the healthy people, but under certain specific circumstances and conditions it can clump together into tangles that may injure the nearby tissue and herald cognitive decline.
Hence staying awake for prolonged period causes tau levels to rise. To conclude, it can be said that tau is released during waking hours during the normal routine of thinking and doing and then this release is decreased during sleep hours allowing the clearing away of released tau.
