Power crisis in Punjab: Many hour cuts in various parts of the state, Production reduced in thermal plants

The state is facing power cuts of around 5 to 7 hours daily, there is an acute shortage of coal in the state’s power plants

Punjab is facing the danger of a power crisis. The state is having hour’s long power cuts. There is also a shortage of coal in the state’s power plants. According to the sources, there is only only one day’s coal left at Talwandi Sabo and Goindwal Thermal plants. A cut of five to seven hours is being imposed in the state’s border areas.

The increasing demand for electricity and shortage of coal in the thermal plants clearly indicating towards the upcoming crisis in the state. The Punjab Government itself is admitting the shortage of coal in the thermal plants. Due to the coal crisis, Powercom is not able to produce electricity according to its capacity, the Punjab Government admitted. 

At present, there are only two or three days of coal stock in some areas whereas some have 13 to 14 days. Coal is in stock for 10 days near Ropar Thermal Plant, 15 days near Lehra Mohabbat, and 14 days near Rajpura.

Public Works and Power Minister Harbhajan Singh said that Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has met the power demand of 8,490 MW in March.PSPCL has also supplied power to the states of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Maharashtra, and West Bengal.
