Slowly and steadily the prediction of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) that Punjab and its nearby areas will witness above-normal heatwave days is turning out to be true. On Monday, one of the cities of Punjab broke the 40°C for the first time in the month of April and became the hottest in the state. As per IMD Chandigarh's daily weather bulletin, Bathinda on Monday became the hottest city in the state. As per the weather department, Bathinda's maximum daytime temperature on April 7 was recorded at 41.9°C, making it the hottest region of Punjab.
On the other hand, at 39.5°C, Faridkot was the second hottest, at 37.3°C Jalandhar was the third hottest, and at 37.2°C Moga was the fourth hottest. Notably, Reports suggest that the temperature in Punjab is likely to rise up to 45°C in some areas between April 7 and April 9. After brief cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of the state, the weather is set to turn extremely hot.
Dr. Kulwinder Kaur, a meteorologist at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, said that while current temperatures remain moderate, a noticeable spike is expected in the coming days. She emphasized that the sudden rise in day temperatures and cooler nights may affect people’s health. "Such fluctuations can lead to heat-related illnesses. It’s important for people to stay hydrated, avoid going out during peak sun hours, and take extra care of children and elderly members of the family,” Dr. Kaur advised.
