The Government of Punjab has recently announced that Thursday, April 10, 2025, will be celebrated as a public holiday for the government institutes across the state. The holiday has been announced on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, which is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism.
The day also highlights the teaching of Lord Mahavir, which motivates people to follow non-violence, truth, and compassion.
It is to be noted that this occasion is celebrated across the country by the Jain community.
This holiday is listed under the official holiday list by the Punjab Government for 2025. Accordingly, all the institutes that run under the administration, including government offices, schools, and private schools, will remain closed on this occasion.
The day was marked as a holiday even in the annual gazetted holiday calendar, which was released at the start of the year.
Mahavir Jayanti Celebrations -
The day is celebrated with religious gatherings, prayers, charity, and processions. It is anticipated that on this day, the people will gather in the Jain temples to mark the special event. The day is also commemorated in Punjabi cities, including Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Patiala.
