Raksha Bandhan 2021 in India: Raksha Bandhan is a biggest festival in India that honours the special tie that exists between siblings. On this day, also known as Rakhi, sisters tie a sacred thread around their brother's wrist as a symbol of love and protection. This year Raksha Bandhan happens on August 22 (Sunday).
Lord Krishna once cut his finger and it began to bleed, according to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. To staunch the bleeding, Draupadi tore a piece of fabric from her saree and wrapped it around his finger.
Krishna assured her that he would protect her from all ills throughout his life because of the sacred thread she tied on the robe. When the Kauravas tried to disrobe Draupadi by tugging her hair, dragging her to the court, and manhandling her, Krishna saves her dignity by giving endless reams of fabric.
Draupadi's gesture of putting a piece of fabric around Krishna's injured finger is similar to Raksha Bandhan, where a female ties a rakhi around her brother's wrist and he promises to protect her, much as Krishna promised to protect Draupadi.
Raksha Bandhan 2021 date
Raksha Bandhan, which literally means "safety" and "bind," honours the special relationship that exists between a brother and his sister. On the full moon day, or Purnima, in the Hindu calendar month of Shravan, the celebration is held. It falls on August 22 this year.

On this day, sisters tie a thread, known as the rakhi, around their brothers' wrists. This exemplifies the sister's everlasting trust in her brother. She also wishes him a long life. The sisters also apply a 'tilak' on the brothers' foreheads. The brothers not only promise to keep their sisters happy and protect them, but they also give them presents and sweets.
Sweet meals are prepared at home, and everyone in the family is dressed in new clothing. However, due to the coronavirus epidemic, Raksha Bandhan 2021 is likely to be a calmer celebration than previous year.
Raksha Bandhan 2021 timings
While greetings and sweets can be shared at any time of day, the practise of tying the rakhi should be performed according to the Hindu Panchang at a certain time.
The Purnima Tithi will begin on August 21 at 7 p.m. and finish on August 22 at 5:31 p.m.
The auspicious time to tie the Rakhi will be at 6:15 a.m. on August 22 and will last until 5:31 p.m. on the same day.
