Both are stories are based on medieval Punjab and many of the elements are the same. Jasrath Khokhar was captured by the Timurid Dynasty during one of the battles of his father "Shiekha Khokhar".
Later he would gain rank as a general in the Timurid Dynasty and marry the daughter of the emperor Shah Rukh. Returning to Punjab in c.1420, he would take the throne of the Khokhars and declare war against the Delhi Sultanate ruler, Mubarak Shah. From which he finally conquers Delhi in c. 1431. The character portrayed in the short story, a village tearaway caught up in a society driven in equal measure by violence and love. Therefore, it can be said that The Legend of Maula Jatt is based on the 1979 Pakistani film Maula Jatt, which was also inspired by a short story.
