From Gangs of Wasseypur to Tumbbad: Why Bollywood movies are re-releasing in theaters?

You simply can’t compare the experience of watching a film online with watching it in theatres and that is what audiences are turning out for.

 Bollywood is re-releasing some of their iconic movies this year. Many movies like Laila Majnu, DDLJ, Hum aapke hain kaun have already been re-released into theatres. Even the announcement of re-release of Rehna hai tere Dil mein, Tumbbad and Gangs of Wasseypur has been made respectively by the directors of both the films on 27th August 2024. These films will be re-released in cinemas on 30th August 2024, this Friday. 

South Indian star Nagarjuna’s movie Mass is also good to re-release in theatres on 28th August 2024.

Imtiaz Ali’s movie Laila Majnu was re-released in theatres on The movie Laila Majnu was first released in 2018 in theatres that time the movie was a complete flop but not in this year, after its re-release in theatres it has got tremendous success. 

Laila Majnu is among dozens of good movies, some directed more than two decades ago, which are going to get new life after getting re-released on big screens. Nostalgia could be the primary factor that why these films are re-released in theatres. Movies got attached with the emotions of audience. There is no doubt that people prefer watching movies on streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar rather than going to cinemas. Another question arises that why are people watching old movies on threatres when then can watch them on streaming platforms? 

“You simply can’t compare the experience of watching a film online with watching it in theatres and that is what audiences are turning out for,” Mr Taran Adarsh says, a bollywood analytics.

Movies like Dilwale dulhania le jayenge (DDLJ) a 1990s much loved rom-com, Hum Apke Hain kaun, action thrillers Baazigar and Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Zindagi na milegi dobara, Jab we met have also brought people back to Cinemas. 

The year 2024 has been particularly bad for the new Bollywood releases. But some films do break through like Street 2 a hindi Horror-comedy currently playing in cinemas has earned nearly four billion rupees, domestically so far to become the year’s biggest bollywood hit.
