Patiala RGNUL Students Protest: On Saturday, the RGNUL Protest entered day 7 with students demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor of the college. For the unversed, students of the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) in Patiala have been protesting against the Vice Chancellor of the College Jai Shankar Singh. RGNUL students are demanding V-C Prof Jai Shankar Singh's resignation as soon as possible. Due to the intense protest, the university announced on Monday that it will remain shut, until further orders. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has assured protesting students on X that “justice will be done” and sought a report from the RGNUL registrar for the entire controversy.

While students continue to protest at RGNUL, Punjab Chief Minister Bhawant Mann recently called the protestors and talked to them. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann who is currently hospitalised himself called the students on the protest and promised support in every situation. As per reports, CM Mann told the students that the state government is committed to protecting their interests in every way. They will not be allowed to be harassed for any reason. The excesses of any person or authority will not be tolerated. The students will be given justice in every situation. On the other hand, even though the university resumed on Friday, the students boycotted the class.

RGNUL Protest Update

Before CM Mann talked to protesting students, the Chairperson of the Punjab Women Commission, Raj Lali Gill wrote a letter to President Murmu. It has also been said that the Chancellor of the University should be removed immediately.

During this inspection, the RGNUL Vice Chancellor not only entered the rooms of the female students but also made inappropriate and derogatory remarks about their attire, saying that they should not wear certain types of clothes. This conduct has caused a lot of discomfort among the female students and is considered a violation of their privacy and modesty.

The commission has found the VC's actions to be highly inappropriate and a clear violation of his administrative role. His behavior has raised serious concerns about the safety, dignity, and rights of female students and has eroded their confidence in the leadership of the university.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains himself took cognizance of the matter. He also summoned a report from the university on this matter.

What did the VC say on the RGNUL Protest?

V-C Prof Jai Shankar Singh denied the allegation and said that he visited the girls’ hostel to inspect and 'identify students who smoke and drink alcohol after midnight' as he had received several complaints.
