Who was Sam Manekshaw?
As mentioned above, Sam Manekshaw was the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. Sam Manekshaw's full name was Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, however, he was respectfully called Sam Bahadur," which means "Sam the Brave" in Hindi.

Sam Manekshaw was born on April 3, 1914, in Amritsar, British India. He was born into a Parsi family. He completed his primary schooling in Punjab and then went to Sherwood College, Nainital. Manekshaw joined the British Indian Army in 1932 and served with distinction during World War II and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. It is pertinent to mention here that Manekshaw played a crucial role in India's victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan, which ultimately led to the creation of Bangladesh.
Notably, Manekshaw was also among the most loved personnel during his time. He was so loved that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi once thought that he will join politics and may dethrone her.
Talking about his awards & honours, Manekshaw was awarded several honors, including the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, and the Order of the British Empire.
