In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is worshiped before doing any auspicious work, it is believed that on the day of Sankashti Chaturthi Lord Ganesha should be worshiped following rituals. This year the day is special for those whose ‘sun’ is on the position in the horoscope. 

The term Sankashti means deliverance and it symbolizes liberation from the trouble. Lord Ganesha is hailed as Vighanharta, that’s why he is worshiped on the Chaturthi Tithi. 

Today, devotees of Lord Ganesha observe a fast, completed after worshiping the moon. During this fast timing of moonrise plays a significant role.

Here is the timing of moonrise in some of the Indian cities:

Mumbai – 10:03 pm, Nashik – 10:00 pm, Nagpur – 9:41 pm, Delhi – 10:03 pm, Chandigarh – 10:09 pm, Surat – 10:07 pm, Kolkata – 9:05 pm, Jaipur – 10:05 pm, Bhopal – 9:52 pm, etc. The timing of the moonrise is expected to be between 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm.

The Chaturthi that comes after the full moon is called Sankasti Chaturthi and the Chaturthi which comes after every new moon is called Vinayaka Chaturthi.

The Ashadh month Krishna Paksha Chaturthi would begin from 3:54 pm on Sunday (June 27) and would end at 2:16 pm on Monday (June 28). 

Here is how people worship Lord Ganesha on Sankashti Chaturthi:

People get up early in the morning, after taking bath, they wore clean red and yellow colored clothes. Lord Ganesha’s statue is kept on a red-colored cloth and is placed according to north or east direction. 

During worship, devotes of lord Ganesha indulge him with water, banana, modak, laddus, jaggery, and rice. A mantra is recited 27 times, it is believed that this mantra provides benefits to job, business, and health.
