Who was Abdul Karim Telgi & what did he do?
Abdul Karim Telgi who was born in Khanapur, Karnataka. He was the mastermind behind one of India's most ingenious scams spread across multiple states which shook the entire country. It was estimated that the Scam 2003 value was approx Rs 30,000 crore. Abul Karim Telgi was a convicted Indian counterfeiter. Telgi earned money by printing counterfeit stamp paper in India. Talking about Abdul's early life, his father was a porter at Khanapur Railway Station. Abdul was very young when his father died and following that he started taking care of his family financially. At first, Abdul earned his living as a fruit seller on a railway station. However, Abdul somehow managed to clear his basic education and then he went to Saudi Arabia. He soon returned to India and shifted to Mumbai.
After a struggle, Abdul met a travel agent and he started working for him. Later, they both started a travel agency and sold fake & forged immigration clearance documents to laborers looking to go to the Gulf countries. In 1991, Abdul was arrested for cheating and forgery and this was the time when his life changed when he met Ram Ratan Soni. Ram Ratan Soni was a stamp vendor who was serving a sentence for alleged forging hare papers. Soni's expertise in the share market amped up Abdul's interest in it. After completing his short-term sentence in jail, Abdul formulated the multi-crore scam which jolted India to its core.
With the help of Ram Ratan Soni, Abdul started forging stamp papers. Reportedly, the legal documents were always high on demand, however, less in supply. Therefore, Abdul Telgi bought decommissioned printing machines from Nashik Security Press to print stamp papers. After that, for the next 6 to 7 years, Abdul continued to buy machines to print fake stamp papers. His buyers would include common people, banks, brokerage, and insurance companies.
Finally, in 2001, Abdul was arrested in 2001 and later he was sentenced to 30 years of prison. In 2002, Abdul tested HIV positive. Finally, in 2013, Abdul was convicted of selling fake stamp papers worth Rs 17 lakhs.
What happened to Abdul Karim Telgi?
Abdul Telgi died suffering from multiple organ failure in Bengaluru on 23 October 2017. Notably, Abdul was acquitted by the Nashik sessions court, a year after his demise, due to lack of evidence.
