Haridwar: At a time when everyone is trying to boost the morale of the Indian Olympic team in Tokyo, a few upper caste individuals insulted Indian hockey player Vandana Katariya's family in Haridwar.

Following India's loss to Argentina in the women's hockey semi-final match at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, casteist remarks were reportedly directed at her family, who live in Roshnabad village in Haridwar.

Soon after the match, two upper caste guys gathered near her home and began making casteist remarks about her family, according to reports.

Soon after the match, two upper caste guys gathered near her home and began screaming casteist insults at her family by saying that India lost since it had “too many Dalit players.” according to reports.

Vandana's family was so upset by the incident that they reported it to the local police, who later arrested one of the two suspects. Katariya's family expressed their pride in the Indian women's hockey team's battling spirit when telling the authorities about the incident.

Shekhar, Vandana's brother, said his family was harassed soon after the match and that people from the upper caste made fun of them.

When his family came out, he said, they didn't stop and made casteist insults towards them.

The SHO of the Sidcul police station verified that the Katariya family had filed a complaint and that the case was being investigated.

SHO of Sidcul Police Station Lakhpat Singh Butola stated that some people had lit off fireworks near Vandana Kataria's house, and that a person had been arrested in response to Chandrashekhar Kataria's allegation.

Vandana Katariya scored three of India's four goals in the final group A hockey game against South Africa on Saturday, becoming the first Indian woman to do so and register a hat-trick at the Olympics at Oi Hockey Stadium.
