Killer robots are lethal autonomous weapons (LAWs) are a type of autonomous military system that can independently search for and engage targets based on programmed constraints and descriptions. LAWs may operate in the air, on land, on water, under water, or in space.


In simple words, Killer robots are machines that operate on the basis of Artificial Intelligence (AI).


Killer robots are different from drones, as drones require human power to operate it. But, killer robots function without the need of human beings. It can make its own decisions with the help of AI. The decision of life and death is left entirely to its sensors, software and the process of the machine.

Many countries are investing heavily in killer robots. On the other hand, more than 70 countries are demanding its ban due to the following reasons:

·       A machine’s ability to decide about death and life of a person.

·       Despite advances in technology, it is a fatal decision to leave human life to the machines.

·       Killer robots cannot differentiate between child and an adult, with a gun or a broom stick in their hand.

·       Killer Robots are unable to differentiate attacking enemy soldiers, wounded or surrendered soldiers.

Some countries feel that killer robots are necessary for the future. It is so because it can protect human soldiers during times of war. Also, they can be used instead of humans in areas affected by chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear attacks.
